In only
his first few weeks in our home this baby Min-Pin has shown a toughness and willingness
to live that has touched our hearts. As first
time dog owners, we knew absolutely nothing about the nasty diseases that claim
the lives of puppies everyday. During Roscoe's first week in our home we were
so focused on getting him housebroken and teaching him to come and sit, that we
never considered that he could be infected by a horrible disease that was pervading
our neighborhood. Well, it happened. After just
10 short days in our home, Roscoe began to vomit and defecate a red substance.
At first we thought he may just have a case of diarrhea-like what humans get all
the time. We thought that the red that showed up in his stool maybe caused by
the red treat we had given him for learning to sit. However, when we noticed that
he wasn't his playful, chipper self, we decided it was time to go to the vet.
When we decided to go, it was late at night and we could not reach our vet (needless
to say we've since changed vets). Fortunately, we had remembered seeing a 24 hour
animal hospital just across from Wal-Mart. The doctor on staff at the hospital
got right to work on Roscoe and diagnosed him with Parvo. He said Roscoe possessed
no antibodies to the disease and that without treatment his chances for living
were slim to none. We told the doctor to do what ever was necessary to save Roscoe,
and he informed us that we could try antibiotics and an IV initially and perhaps
a bloo transfusion if necessary, but that there was still a good chance he wouldn't
make it. After the first night Roscoe hadn't experienced any diarrhea or vomiting
and his health began to improve steadily over the next few days. The doctor informed
us that Roscoe was a very lucky dog. However, we believe luck had nothing to do
with it. Roscoe survived his ordeal because he is strong and because he wasn't
ready to leave his family. For us it is impossible to express the gratitude we
feel towards the doctors at Macro Animal Hospital for all their efforts in helping
Roscoe. What's more we can not express enough gratitude to Roscoe for not leaving
us and for fighting with every ounce of his heart. We
are so proud of him and we want everyone to know just how special a dog he truly
is. -Written by Jim and Genny Lorenz, Austin, TX
