Dog Food And Nutrition Care Article: Tips On How To Reduce And Control Your Dog's Weight

In this article, "Tips On How To Reduce And Control Your Dog's Weight", you will be given some practical tips on how to make your dog's weight management program a success.

  1. See your veterinarian before beginning any weight management program. Your veterinarian can help determine your pet's ideal weight and overall health.
  2. If you do switch foods, gradually add more of the new product and less of your previous food each day until the change over is complete (about 7 to 10 days). This helps avoid any digestive upset.
  3. Have plenty of fresh water in a clean bowl available at all times.
  4. If you are helping your pet lose weight, don't feed table scraps or high-calorie treats. Do not give in to begging, show your love with a hug instead of extra food.
  5. Help your pet burn calories and stay fit with moderate daily exercise.
  6. Involve the entire family in the feeding routine. Each family member should understand their pet's meal time and snacking regimen.
  7. Measure your pet's food. The feeding instructions on the packages are a good starting point for determining how much food your pet needs. Adjust the quantity up or down depending upon your pet's body condition. It is important to carefully measure the proper amount of food to meet your pet's caloric needs.
  8. Remember just like people, pets lose weight at different rates. Be patient for success.
