| Unique nutrient requirements for "geriatric" dogs are not known.
Older dogs should be fed as individuals, based upon their health, body condition,
and level of activity. Some "middle aged" or "elderly" pet owners believe that
"age is a state of mind" and, therefore, prefer to treat an older dog as a mature
adult, without any special dietary change. But for those dog owners who are looking
for a senior-type diet, there are commercial diets formulated for complete and
balanced nutrition for adult dogs. Over-nutrition or over-feeding after
maturity may predispose animals to obesity, which is associated with various physical
disorders such as an impaired heart, breathing and liver functions, digestive
disturbances, and increased stress on the skeleton, joints and tendons. For these
reasons, it is particularly important to feed older dogs according to their individual
needs and to maintain a healthy body condition. -------------------------------------------------
