| Place food and water bowls away from foot traffic and noise. Do not
change the location unless it is absolutely necessary. Feed a very young puppy
three times a day. Reduce it to twice a day when he is five to six months old.
Feed him all he wants at first, but only at regularly scheduled mealtimes. Its
best not to allow the puppy to become overweight. Your veterinarian can help you
determine this. Clean his food and water bowls daily; keep his water bowl filed
with fresh, clean water at all times. The food required to maintain good
body condition will vary depending on age, level of activity and environment.
Consequently, the food required for each dog will vary and should be adjusted
accordingly. If switching from another type of food, do so gradually. Increase
the amount of the new diet and reduce the amount of the old diet over a 10
14 day period until you are only feeding the new diet. Food should be fed
moistened with water until the puppy is weaned (six to eight weeks old) or older
if he is one of the extremely small toy breeds. Moistening dry puppy food with
warm water releases more aroma, improves the palatability of the food and makes
it easier for young puppies to chew. Important: dry food should be moistened with
water, not milk. Excess milk can act as a laxative and cause digestive problems
especially if a puppy is no longer used to milk. You should gradually reduce added
water if you want to feed dry food later. Or you can continue to feed it moistened
if you prefer. When food is fed dry, it can be left in a self-feeder or bowl at
all times and replenished as necessary. -------------------------------------------------
